Paul Hull was the maternal grandfather of Day (Zimmerman) Dobbert an Ajijic ex-pat who resided in the Lake Chapala area for approx. 40 years. Day was an only child and childless herself so her passing ends the family line.
The subject of the painting, Paul Hull, was a well known reporter in Chicago who also was the Pubicity Director for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the Chairman of the Entertainment Committee for the Chicago Press Club.
The portrait was painted in 1893. The artist was born in Maastricht, Holland in 1855 and died in New York in 1935.
He was a known portrait artist, known for his depictions of Asian subjects.
The painting does not appear to be signed but the provenance is well established.
It still retains its´original frame.
